In short
To optimize for Google AI Overviews is to make your page one of the sources Google's generated summary quotes and links. The overview is assembled from results Google already ranks, so the recipe is layered: keep earning strong rankings, put a liftable answer at the top of the page, back it with structured data and sourced facts, and hold the authority that makes Google comfortable citing you.
A ranking used to be the finish line. Now there is a layer above it. For a growing share of searches, Google opens with a paragraph it wrote itself, and the blue links start somewhere below the fold. The paragraph is not sourceless, though: it leans on real pages and shows them as citations. Which means the game did not end — it moved up one level, and the pages that adapt get to play on it.
01 / The thing itselfWhat Google AI Overviews are
An AI Overview is a summary generated by Google's Gemini models and placed at the top of the results page for queries where Google decides a synthesized answer helps — typically questions, comparisons and how-to searches rather than navigational ones. Alongside the text sits a panel of linked sources the summary drew on. AI Mode pushes the same machinery further: a conversational results experience where you refine with follow-up questions and every reply carries its own citations. Different surface, same underlying question for you — does Google trust your page enough to quote it?
02 / The assemblyHow the overview picks its sources
Google has described the process as grounded in its ordinary search systems. Behind one visible query, the system explores related subquestions — a technique often called query fan-out — retrieves pages its ranking systems already consider strong for each of them, and lets the model compose an answer supported by that set. Citations then point to the pages backing specific statements. Two practical consequences follow. First, there is no separate index to charm: if you are invisible in classic retrieval, you are invisible to the overview. Second, one page rarely covers the whole fan-out, so covering a topic properly across several focused pages widens the surface Google can pull from. The precise selection logic is unpublished and moves often, so build for the durable pattern, not a leaked trick.
03 / The foundationRankings still buy the ticket
It is tempting to treat AI Overviews as a new channel with new rules. Mostly, they are a new reader of the old signals. Crawlability, speed, clean rendering and the rest of your technical foundations decide whether Google can even fetch and parse the page it might quote. Topical depth and earned links decide whether that page sits in the retrieved set at all. Everything specific to overviews happens after that gate, which is why we treat this as a layer on top of SEO rather than a replacement — a distinction we unpack in GEO vs SEO.
04 / The citation layerOptimize for Google AI Overviews on the page
Once a page can be retrieved, the work is making it the easiest one to quote. Four habits do most of that:
- Answer first, then depth. Open the page, or each H2 section, with two or three sentences that fully resolve the question on their own. A model composing an overview lifts complete thoughts, not scattered fragments it has to reassemble.
- One question per section. Phrase H2s the way people actually search, and keep each section self-contained. The fan-out means Google may want your page for a subquestion you never targeted directly.
- Structured data that confirms the text. Article, FAQPage, Organization and breadcrumb markup give Google a machine-checkable version of what the page claims and who stands behind it. Markup should mirror the visible content exactly, never extend it.
- Sourced facts over adjectives. Concrete, attributed numbers and quotes give the model something checkable to build a statement on. Superlatives give it nothing.
That last point has research behind it. Aggarwal and colleagues tested content changes against generative engines and measured visibility gains of up to roughly 40 percent for pages enriched with citations, quotations and statistics (GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, ACM SIGKDD 2024). It is a research benchmark across test queries, not a promised outcome for any single site — but it is the clearest published signal that being verifiably well-sourced pays in AI answers.
05 / The tradeThe fewer-clicks reality
Be clear-eyed about what a citation buys. When an overview answers the question, fewer people scroll to the listings: Pew Research Center measured in 2025 that US users clicked a result on about 8 percent of page visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15 percent without one. So a cited page will often see fewer raw visits than the same ranking used to deliver. What it gains is presence at the moment of decision: your name inside the answer, and visitors who click through already half-convinced. The businesses that lose in this trade are the ones absent from both the overview and the results beneath it.
06 / The measureHow to know if it is working
Google Search Console counts impressions and clicks from AI Overviews inside the ordinary performance report, without a separate breakdown, so you cannot read citation share off a dashboard. Measure it directly instead: keep a fixed list of the twenty or thirty searches that matter to your business, run them on a schedule, and log three things — whether an overview appears, whether you are cited in it, and where you sit in the classic results below. Add branded-search volume and direct traffic as soft signals of being seen without being clicked. The pattern over months is the metric; any single check is noise.
07 / The wider gameOne discipline, several engines
Google's overview is one generative engine among several, and the levers overlap heavily without being identical. The broader craft — making a business visible and quotable to AI systems — is covered in our guide to what GEO is, and the assistant-specific version, where training data and live browsing replace Google's ranked retrieval, is in how to get cited in ChatGPT. Do the shared work once, well, and each engine becomes a smaller marginal effort.
08 / The Elevate wayHow we run this in practice
At Elevate Labs in Oslo, AI Overview work is part of every engagement, not a bolt-on audit. We build the ranking foundation, restructure pages around liftable answers, wire the schema, and add only facts we can attribute — then we track citations on the query list openly, because no honest agency can promise a spot in a system Google keeps rebalancing. See the full offer on our GEO agency page, or keep reading in the field guides.
