What is GEO?

Search is being answered, not just listed. GEO — generative engine optimization — is the work of being the source an AI names. Here is what it is, and how you earn the citation.

Definition

GEO stands for generative engine optimization: the work of getting a business found — and correctly cited — inside AI answers like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. Where SEO aims to rank a page on a list of results, GEO aims to be the source the AI names inside its answer, where more and more decisions are now made.

Fig 1The highlighted line is the citation. GEO is the discipline of being the source it points to.

For twenty years, winning search meant ranking a page a person would click. That is changing. A growing share of questions are answered on the spot by an AI that reads the web and writes a summary — and names a few sources. Being ranked is no longer the same as being the answer.

01 / The shiftWhy GEO exists now

Two things happened at once: people started asking AI systems the questions they used to type into Google, and Google itself began answering directly with AI Overviews. In both, the click is often gone — the user gets their answer, and maybe a couple of cited names, without visiting a single site. If your business is not one of those names, it is invisible in the moment of decision.

02 / The differenceGEO vs SEO

They are cousins, not rivals. The same foundations — a clean, crawlable site and genuine authority — help both. But the target differs.

04 / The movesHow to get cited by AI

There is no paid slot inside an answer — you earn the citation the way you earn a ranking. Answer real questions directly and early on the page. Keep your facts consistent everywhere. Build genuine authority in your field. And make the site trivially easy for a machine to parse. Do this and, over time, the systems start to reach for you.

05 / The measureCan GEO be tracked?

Yes — it is younger than rank tracking, but real. You measure presence (does your business appear when a model answers a relevant question), accuracy (is it described correctly), and citation (are you named as a source). The tooling is improving fast, and the direction of travel is clear.

06 / The Elevate wayGEO in practice

Elevate Labs treats GEO as a first-class service, not an add-on — built on the same in-house foundations as our search work, in Oslo, for Norway and beyond. See how it works on our GEO agency page, and read how it sits alongside classic search in what an SEO agency does.

07 / QuestionsFrequently asked

Is GEO the same as “AI SEO” or AEO?
Roughly, yes. GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization) both describe the work of being surfaced and cited inside AI-generated answers. The name matters less than the goal: be the source the answer trusts.
Will GEO replace SEO?
No — it extends it. Classic search is not disappearing, and the foundations overlap heavily. The winners will do both: rank on the results page and get cited inside the answer.
Does my site need to change for GEO?
Often only for the better. Clearer answers, consistent facts and clean structure help human readers and classic SEO too. GEO rarely asks for anything that hurts the rest.
How soon does GEO show results?
AI systems can pick up fresh, well-structured, credible content faster than classic rankings move — sometimes within weeks — though trust, like ranking, compounds over time.
