What is SEO

What it is, and how you get found.

Search engine optimization, or SEO, is the work of making a website easy to find, understand and rank for search engines. A clear primer: how search works, what matters, and how long it takes.

What is SEO, in plain language

SEO (search engine optimization) is the practice of making a website easy for search engines to find, understand and trust, so it appears when people search for what you offer. Unlike ads, which stop when the budget does, SEO earns organic visibility that keeps working over time, and it now reaches into AI answers too.

SEO (search engine optimization) is the work of making a website easy to find, understand and trust, so that search engines show it when people look for what you offer. Unlike ads, which stop the moment the budget runs out, SEO earns organic visibility you own, and that keeps working long after the work is done. This is a plain-language primer: what SEO is, how ranking actually happens, the pillars that move it, and how it now reaches into AI answers too.

How search engines decide what to rank

A search engine does three things: it crawls (follows links and downloads pages), indexes (reads and stores what it understands) and ranks (picks, for each query, the pages that answer best). Ranking rests on three broad signals. Relevance: does the page actually match the intent behind the search? Authority: do other trusted sites, and a track record within your topic, vouch for it? Technical health: can the page be crawled, loaded fast and understood without friction? A brilliant page that cannot be crawled simply never enters the race.

The pillars of SEO

Content
On-page & content

Pages that answer real search intent in clear language, with the structure and internal links that help engines understand them.

On-site
Technical SEO

Crawlable HTML, Core Web Vitals, correct index coverage, canonicalization and sitemaps that line up. The foundation everything rests on.

Off-site
Off-page & links

Links from other trusted websites, plus the mentions and reputation that build authority within your topic over time.

Local & AI
Local & AI visibility

Showing up in map results and near-me searches, and being cited inside AI answers, where the next layer of demand is decided.

Where SEO meets AI answers (GEO)

More people now ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews instead of scrolling a list of links. Being found and correctly cited inside those answers is called generative engine optimization (GEO). It is not a replacement for SEO; it builds on the same foundation of clear, crawlable, trustworthy content. Get the fundamentals right and you show up in both places.

How to get started

Start by fixing what blocks the engine, then earn relevance and authority page by page. Map the demand that already exists, write pages that answer it honestly, keep the site fast and crawlable, and build links that genuinely vouch for you. It is maintenance, not a one-time task: competitors move and engines change. If you would rather someone did the work, see our SEO agency in Oslo.

Common questions

What is SEO in simple terms? It is making your website easy for search engines to find, understand and trust, so it shows up when people search for what you offer, without paying per click.

How long does SEO take? Technical fixes can surface within weeks. Rankings on competitive queries usually build over three to six months, because authority takes time to earn. Anyone promising a top spot in days is selling something else.

Can I do SEO myself? Yes, the basics are learnable, and our guides walk through them. The hard part is competitive, ongoing work: technical depth, content at scale and real links. That is where an agency earns its keep.

What is the difference between SEO and GEO? SEO is about ranking in classic search results; GEO is about being found and cited inside AI answers. Same foundation, two surfaces.
