What is SEO
What it is, and how you get found.
Search engine optimization, or SEO, is the work of making a website easy to find, understand and rank for search engines. A clear primer: how search works, what matters, and how long it takes.
What is search engine optimization?
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the work of structuring a website so that search engines like Google find, understand and rank it higher for relevant queries. The goal is simple: to show up when someone searches for what you offer, without paying per click. Where ads are rented space that disappears when the budget runs out, SEO is organic visibility you own and that keeps delivering long after the work is done.
How search engines work
A search engine does three things. It crawls: follows links and downloads pages. It indexes: reads and stores what it understands of the content. And it ranks: chooses, for each query, which pages answer best, by relevance and authority. A page that cannot be crawled or understood does not get ranked, no matter how good it is for a human. Much of SEO is therefore about removing whatever stands in the way of these three steps.
The four parts that matter
Technical SEO. Crawlable HTML, fast loading (Core Web Vitals), correct index coverage, canonicalization and sitemaps that line up. The foundation: if the engine cannot get in, the rest does not matter.
Content. Pages that answer what people actually search for, in clear language with honest answers. Good content meets demand that already exists, instead of guessing.
Links. Internal links that show the engine how the site fits together, and external links from other websites that act as votes of trust.
Authority. The sum of signals over time that makes the engine trust you within your topic. Authority cannot be bought quickly; it is built.
How long does it take?
Technical improvements can show within weeks. Rankings on competitive queries usually build over three to six months, because authority takes time to earn. Anyone who promises a top spot in days is selling something other than SEO.
Common myths
"SEO is tricking Google." The opposite. Modern SEO is about making an honest page easier to understand. Tricks that once worked are now penalized.
"More keywords is better." No. Stuffing a page full of keywords hurts more than it helps. The engine rewards meaning, not repetition.
"It is done once." SEO is maintenance. Competitors move, and search engines change, so a page that was optimized last year is not finished this year.
SEO, GEO and the road ahead
The next layer of search happens inside AI answers. Being found and cited there is called generative engine optimization (GEO), and it builds on the same foundation as SEO. Want someone to do the work? See our SEO agency in Oslo.
